Every few years I feel compelled to revisit computer science first principles. It is a welcome reprieve from the breakneck pace we're so accustom to. My usual intent is for self study, however, this time I have two additional goals: to see how far down the stack we can make systems to be observable, understandable, and modifiable, and document that journey in the open.
